Joey Cannard

Joey Cannard“Thanks for giving me a job.”

Whether a book lover is looking for a hardback or paperback book, fiction or nonfiction, they are sure to find a used book to purchase and enjoy at www.goodwillbooks.com. Keeping the customers who shop through the online store satisfied is what Joey Cannard, an E-Commerce employee, loves to do. He is a dedicated worker who keeps the books coming.

Five days a week, Joey is one of two employees who transport large book containers to designated areas within the department. He plays a key role in making sure the inventory of 30,000 used books is efficiently processed for sale. Known for his big smile and strong work ethic, Joey is considered a great asset to a very busy department. Stephanie Writt, E-Commerce manager, tells us, “His enthusiasm is intoxicating and everyone on staff sincerely enjoys working with Joey.”

Perhaps Joey’s cheerful attitude at work stems from his love of keeping busy and working hard. School was a challenging place for Joey who suffers from Cerebral Palsy. However, he persevered and at 19 years old, graduated from Century High School in Hillsboro. Despite his inability to communicate as clearly as he would like, he does not allow frustration to get in the way of making great friendships at work.

Working at Goodwill and receiving a paycheck has given Joey an opportunity to be self-reliant. He shares the rent of a condominium with his brother, Tim, and his best friend, Andy.  While he likes the arrangement, he is quick to admit the three young men are typical, messy bachelors. Rather than cleaning, Joey prefers to travel in his spare time. His favorite destination is Disneyland, and he enjoys the well-known amusement park so much he has visited 14 times!

When he is not working or visiting Disneyland, this busy man is traveling to compete in Special Olympic events. For years, Joey has been competing in basketball, golf and bowling, and has received medals in all categories. He has accomplished a lot in his young life, and his achievements are proudly celebrated by his parents and girlfriend, Amy.

Joey has touched the lives of many people. His father, Paul Cannard, sums it up nicely, “When Joey was graduating from the sixth grade it was predicted by a classmate that Joey would grow up to become a goodwill ambassador in later life.” Whether he is at work handling books with care, competing at a sports event, or simply spending time with his coworkers or family members, there is no doubt Joey is an expert at spreading joy.
