An Exercise in Hope:  Tom Nelson's Story

 March 30, 2010:  Tom Nelson of Lebanon was born 44 years ago with a disability passed from his mother.  Within the first 20-weeks of her pregnancy, she contracted the Rubella virus, commonly known as German measles. The disease can cause serious birth defects, including congenital rubella syndrome – doctors say 58% of those babies are born with deafness, and Tom was among that percentage.   Read More

Door to Door - Local Scouts Ready to Do a Good Turn

February 17, 2010:  Very soon, the country’s largest door-to-door donation drive will be coming to your community. This Saturday, March 6th is Good Turn Day (GTD).  In 1951, East Portland Rotarians started GTD to help Goodwill Industries of the Columbia Willamette at the time when donations were the slowest. Goodwill Is Rich In Best Buys

January 27, 2010:   In 2009, Goodwill Industries of the Columbia Willamette (GICW) received nearly 149 million pounds of donations.

GICW collects four times what we usually receive during the month of December.  During this time, the most valuable merchandise is donated as donors scramble to get that last possible tax break before the end of the year.  As a result, January and February are GREAT shopping months at Goodwill.

Portland's Goodwill Sends Relief Funds to Haiti
